Buy custom picture matting online at Matboard and More®

1. Choose Mat Type

There are 11 picture mat types available, and you must select inside the box with the correct core (1-11). By default Decorative White Core is selected as it is our most popular color. Read our guide more information on cores and matboard quality. Choose picture matting type, Decorative, Conservation or Berkshire

2. Choose Top Color

The top color is the primary matte color. There are hundreds of colors to choose from across the various mat types. The colors are shown in order of decreasing brightness. For example, Very White is the brightest white in Decorative White Core, Arctic White is slightly duller, Antique White is slightly off-white and the whites continue to become more creamy. Photo Gray is brighter and lighter than Dark Gray. The same is true for all hues.

Note: You can order color samples for $1 by using our samples show page. Choose top color for the picture frame mat

3. Choose Bottom Color

The bottom color is the secondary matte color, or the inside border. The bottom color is only relevant when you are double matting. The bottom color has nothing to do with the backing board color. There are hundreds of colors to choose from across the various mat types just as with the top mat.

Note: You can order color samples for $1 by using our samples show page. Choose bottom color for the picture frame mat

4. Choose Quantity

The higher the quantity of picture mats you get, the greater your volume discount will be. We don't have volume breaks at specific numbers, you have the freedom to order the exact amount of mats you need knowing that you are getting the best discount available. The discounts begin at 2 with 7% and max out at 1000, with 76%. You can see your volume discount applied under the unit price display right underneath "Add to Cart". For more pricing, see our wholesale pricelist.

5. Choose Outer Size

Click inside the red box underneath the words outer size. The outer size defines the outside dimensions of the matboard. If you are planning on framing this matboard, your outer size should match the size of the inside of your picture frame, the same as the glass size. See our measuring matboard guide for more information.

You can use the drop down menus under Option 1 to pick any size down to the 1/8".

Note: We do not carry over-size (over 32" x 40") mattes at this time since the shipping costs are so high. Select custom matboard outer size

6. Choose Opening Size

Click inside the red box underneath the words opening size. The opening size defines the cut out from the middle of the matboard. The opening should be 1/2" smaller than your image. See our measuring matboard guide for more information. You can use the drop down menus under Option 1 to pick any size down to the 1/8".

Note: You must have at least a 1" border. Select custom matboard outer size

7. Choose Offset

The offset, also known as bottom weighting, will shift your mat up vertically. There is no extra charge for this and it optional. Margins are measured from the outside to the opening, which means they include the bottom mat in a double mat.

Ensure your mat is in the correct orientation, (landscape/portrait) by using the rotate button on the top left of the preview.

Top Center is the most common off-set, it means the TOP and SIDE margins are equal.

8. Choose Frame

Picture Frames are available in Black Satin or Dark Walnut, and 1 1/8" and 2". They come with backing board, plexiglass and a saw-tooth hanger.

9. Choose Backing Board

Backing board material is used to go behind the the image and matboard. It's most useful when used with show bags in a show kit. You can buy backing board as a stand alone item by using our backing board shop page.

10. Choose Show Bag

Show bags are used to protect your artwork. They are most useful when used with backing boards in a show kit. You can buy show bags as a stand alone item by using our show bags shop page.

11. Choose Plexiglass

Plexiglass is a great substitute for regular glass. You can buy Plexigass in any custom size as a stand alone item by using our plexiglass shop page.

12. Look at Preview

The preview is on the left side of the ordering page. Here you can see the inside trim of the double matte if you chose a bottom color.
